Binary corrected X-ray light curve of Cygnus X-3: Implications for the timing properties of the compact binary system

چکیده
We study the binary corrected X-ray light curve of Cygnus X-3 using the RXTE-ASM (All Sky Monitor) data and RXTE-PCA data. We find that the X-ray template derived from the EXOSAT observations adequately explains the binary variations. Using the recently determined quadratic binary ephemeris we correct the RXTE-PCA lightcurve and obtain the power spectrum which shows distinct features of shifting towards the low frequency regime vis-a-vis the Galactic X-ray binaries. The power spectrum doesn’t vary from the hard to the soft state. We also obtain the binary corrected RXTE-ASM monitoring lightcurve and examine the previously obtained correlation between soft X-ray (2 – 12 keV from RXTE ASM), hard X-ray (20 – 100 keV from CGRO – BATSE) and radio (2.2 G Hz from GBI) after the binary correction. We find that the correlation time scale is less than a day.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملOrbital Dynamics of Cygnus X - 3
Orbital-phased-resolved infrared spectra of Cygnus X-3 in outburst and quiescence, including tomo-graphic analysis, are presented. We confirm the phasing of broad He ii and N v lines in quiescence, such that maximum blue shift corresponds to the X-ray minimum at Φ = 0.00 ± 0.04. In outburst, double-peaked He i structures show a similar phasing with two significant differences: (a) although vary...
متن کاملSpectral states and accretion geometries in Galactic black hole binaries
Black hole X-ray binaries, binary systems where matter from a companion star is accreted by a stellar mass black hole, thereby releasing enormous amounts of gravitational energy converted into radiation, are seen as strong X-ray sources in the sky. As a black hole can only be detected via its interaction with its surroundings, these binary systems provide important evidence for the existence of...
متن کاملFive Years in the Life of Cygnus X-1: BATSE Long-Term Monitoring
The hard X-ray emission from Cygnus X-1 has been monitored continually by BATSE since the launch of CGRO in April 1991. We present the hard X-ray intensity and spectral history of the source covering a period of more than five years. Power spectral analysis shows a significant peak at the binary orbital period. The 20–100 keV orbital light curve is roughly sinusoidal with a minimum near superio...
متن کاملGamma rays from compact binary systems
Some of the very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray sources detected with the modern generation of Cherenkov telescopes have been identified with previously known X-ray binary systems. These detections demonstrate the richness of non-thermal phenomena in compact galactic objects containing relativistic outflows or winds produced near black holes and neutron stars. Recently, the well-known microquasar ...
